Terrific early view of the VMI Gates, entrance to the Virginia Military Institute. Handsome stone entrance piers, cannons flanking each side, unpaved road. Campus buildings can be seen down the drive. Piers say "1839", "VMI", "Virginia", and "1607". I can see where gates were hung, but the gates are no longer there. Handcolored view circa the late 1910s or so.
